Irish government submits salmon farming report to NASCO
6th June 2010: Irish Report to NASCO

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food have submitted a report on salmon farming regulation in Ireland to the North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organisation (‘NASCO’). The Irish submission missed the deadline of October 2009 by some six months and was, therefore, received too late to be evaluated by the expert review group; it will be reviewed by the group in the coming months....

Conor Lenihan, the Minister of State at the Department of Communications, Energy & Natural Resources, responded to requests on how a commercial salmon fishery could be operated on stocks in the Castlemaine Harbour Special Area of Conservation. Speaking at a meeting with local fishermen in Cromane Community Centre, the Minister advised that he has sought details from the fisheries boards as to how the fishery can be undertaken in a sustainable manner, maximizing the opportunities for commercial fishing while ensuring that stocks are not over-exploited...

24th April: WILD salmon could vanish from many of Scotland’s rivers unless drastic action is taken to preserve the species, a conservation body has warned.
The Atlantic Salmon Trust, whose patron is the Prince of Wales, said that salmon could disappear from many rivers within just 30 years unless steps are taken to protect the species.
